Victoria Cross Medal - VC
The Victoria Cross is one of the rarest gallantry medals in the world and only 1,355 full size medals were issued to servicemen/ women.
Created in January 1854 by Queen Victoria the original medal ribbon was royal red for the Army and Blue for the Navy. (No air force in 1854).It was then changed in 1912 and was going to be red for all three services but the Navy and Air force objected on the grounds some of the Navy would have blue and some red, so they came to a compromise and added blue to the red ribbon to make Crimson which the ribbon still is to this day. The full size medal has the name rank and unit on the reverse side of the V. The Last Victoria Cross issued was to Private Johnson Beharry on the 18th March 2005 for his actions in Iraq when he served with the 1st Battalion Prince of Wales Royal Regiment.
George Cross Medal - GC
The British George Cross Medal is a plain bordered cross with a circular medallion in the centre depicting the effigy of St George and the Dragon after Benedetto Pistrucci, surrounded by the words FOR GALLANTRY in the angle of each limb is the Royal cypher.
This is the highest gallantry award for civilians as well as being awarded to members of the armed forces in actions for which purely military honours would not normally be granted.
Instituted 24th September 1940.
Military Medal The MM British Gallantry Medal - MM
British Military Medal This Gallantry medal was awarded in Silver excellent genuine version. The MM was born out of close combat conditions of warfare during the First World War and the need to recognise the almost daily acts of Gallantry/Bravery in the face of the enemy under terrible conditions which fell below the Victoria Cross and DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal). This medal was rendered obsolete in 1993 when the Military Cross become available to all ranks.
Military Cross Medal British Gallantry Medal - MC
British Military Cross Gallantry Medal . An ornamental cross with straight arms terminating in broad finials decorated with Imperial crowns. The royal cypher appears at the centre and the cross is suspended from a plain silver suspension bar. Ribbon - 3 Equal bars of white, deep purple and white.
This Gallantry medal was awarded only to officers when it was first introduced 31st December 1914. This medal become available to all ranks when the Military medal was discontinued in 1993.Unlike the Victoria Cross this medal was issued to serving forces who survived campaigns.
George Medal - GM
Awarded for acts of bravery where the services were not so outstanding as to merit the George Cross. Though primarily a civilian award it has also been given to service personnel for heroism not in the face of the enemy Of the approximately 2000 medals awarded 1030 have been to civilians.
The ribbon Colours are - Crimson Red with five narrow Blue stripes.
Queens Police Medal - QPM
The QPM for gallantry has been effectively redundant since November 1977 when it was made possible to award the George Medal posthumous equivalent of the GM for police officers.
The obverse (front) has the effigy of the reigning sovereign (H M The Queen).
The reverse has FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE wrote on it.
Meritorious Service Medal
Meritorious Service Medal Army with ribbon and Boxed.
Ribbon Colours are Crimson with a White central stripe and edges.
Meritorious Service Medals were first Instituted 19th December 1845 to the Army, and were originally only plain crimson until 1916 when white edges were added and changed again 1916-1917, when the three White stripes was issued. The Royal Air Force, Royal Marines and Royal Navy also have MSM'S.
Waterloo Medal
British 1815 Waterloo medal for the Infamous Waterloo Battle By Wellington on June 18th 1815.
Some 39,000 Full Size Medals were issued including - The Foot Guards 1st or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards and 27th,28th,30th,42nd,44th,52nd,73rd,79th,92nd and 95th of foot Royal Artillery, Royal Horse Artillery, Scots Greys, to name but a few.
Crimea Medal
British 1854-1856 Crimea medal awarded to British Army (Infantry and Cavalry) Navy and Marines. Awarded to combatants and campaigns such as the "Charge of the Light Brigade" at Balaklava other campaigns include Inkerman, Sebastopol, Azoff and Alma.
The ribbon colours are Pale Blue with Yellow Edges.
Queens South Africa Medal
Queens South Africa medal for the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902.
Because of the large numbers of British and Imperial forces which took part and the numerous campaign and battle clasps awarded this is one of the most popular and closely studied of all medals.
26 Clasps are available for this medal but the maximum recorded is 9 for a single medal.
Some of the clasps are Cape Colony, Defence of Kimberley, Defence of Ladysmith ( as per the film Zulu), Orange free state, Transvaal, Diamond Hill.
The ribbon colours are Red with two narrow Blue stripes and a broad central Orange stripe.
Kings South Africa Medal
This medal was never issued without the Queens medal and was awarded to all personnel engaged in operations in South Africa in 1901-1902 when fighting was confined to numerous skirmishes with isolated guerrilla bands.
This medal has 2 possible clasps SOUTH AFRICA 1901 and SOUTH AFRICA 1902.
The ribbon colours are - Three equal stripes of Green, White and Orange.
Egypt Medal
Egypt medal 1882 - 1889
British involvement in Egypt deepened after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and foreign armies mutinied and triggered an anti-European uprising in 1882.
The obverse side has the veiled profile of Queen Victoria and the reverse side has a picture of the sphinx.
The ribbon colours are - 3 Blue stripes and 2 White stripes
Royal Navy Auxiliary Service Medal
Royal Navy Auxiliary Service Medal is awarded for 12 years service. A bar was awarded for each additional 12 years service,
1710 were awarded and this medal was formerly the Royal Naval Mine watching service before it was changed to Auxiliary.
The ribbon colours are - Dark Blue with a narrow Green central stripe and broad White stripes at the edges bisected by thin dark Green stripes.
Ulster Defence Regiment
Ulster Defence Regiment Medal For Long Service and Good Conduct.
Ribbon Colour - Similar to the Military LSGC but with a Green central stripe
Granted to personnel for 15 years exemplary service after 1st April 1970.
British Gulf War Medal 1990
British Gulf War Medal awarded to the armed forces during the desert campaign of 1990-1991 to the 4th & 7th Armoured Brigades. Around 33,000 British men/women were deployed but only about 7,700 combatant troops received the bar (16th Jan-28th Feb 1991).
General Service Medal with Northern Ireland Clasp
British General/ Campaign Service Medal with Northern Ireland Clasp.
Introduced in 1962 to replace both the naval general service medal and the 1918 General Service medal. The Northern Ireland bar was awarded for covering at least 30 days peace duties between 1969 up to present day. This is the longest running clasp/bar ever issued.
Special Constabulary Medal
British Special Constabulary Long Service & Good Conduct Medal was instituted 30th August 1919. This medal comes in Bronze and was awarded to all ranks of the special constabulary for 9 years unpaid service with more than 50 duties per annum. Obverse - effigy of the reigning monarche; Reverse - a partial laurel wreath with a six-line text inscribed FOR FAITHFUL.
India General Service Medal 1903-1935
India General Service Medal 1903-1935
This medal was awarded for a number of campaigns and operations before and after the first world war.
Ribbon colours are Green with a broad blue central band.
This medal has 14 possible bars/ clasps that can be worn.
Three obverse types were used Edward V11 (1908-1910), George V (1910-1930) ,George V Indiae Imp (1930-1935).
This medal is also known as the Khyber pass medal.
India General Service Medal 1936-1939.
British India General Service Medal 1936 1939 with North west frontier clasp/ bar.
Issued to British and Indian Armies and the RAF. The obverse shows a crowned effigy of King George V1.The reverse shows a tiger with the word INDIA across the top.
For service on the North West frontier between 1936-1939.
H M The Queens Coronation Medal 1953.
This medal celebrated the Coronation Of Queen Elizabeth II who was crowned on 2nd June 1953.
The medal shows Queen Elisabeth II in a Tudor crown and robes of state.
About 129,000 medals were issued in silver.
The Colours represent the Union Jack.
Cadet Forces Medal
British Cadet forces Medal. This medal is awarded to commissioned officers and adult NCO'S (Non Commissioned Officers) for 12 years service in the Cadet forces Army, Air or Sea cadets. A Bar is awarded for each additional 8 years. This is a medal not seen by most collectors and the Full size medal is worth at least £60.00 as their are not many Instructors have it. The reverse has a hand holding aloft the torch of learning.
Volunteer Reserves Service Medal
British Rare Volunteer Reserves Service Medal was Instituted in 1999.
Awarded to all ranks of the Volunteer Reserves who complete 10 years of continuous service, bars for additional 5 year periods are also awarded.
This medal replaces the Royal Navy Decoration, the Royal Navy Reserve long service and good conduct medal.
Has inscribed on the obverse the sovereigns effigy the reverse has inscribed FOR SERVICE IN THE VOLUNTEER RESERVES above a spray of oak (picture shows reverse and obverse sides.
The ribbon colour is Dark Green with narrow central stripes of Dark Blue, Scarlet & Light Blue separated from the Green by two narrow bands of Gold.
Police Long Service Good Conduct Medal LSGC
The Police Long Service and Good Conduct medal has been awarded since 14th June 1951.
It is awarded for 22 years long service and good conduct for full time service in any UK constabulary. By a Royal warrant 1st May 1956 it was extended to other commonwealth forces Including Australia, Papua New Guinea and Naura.
Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal LSGC
The Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct medal has been awarded since 1st June 1954.
It is awarded to all ranks of local authority fire brigades whether full or part time for 20 years exemplary service. The ribbon colours are red with narrow yellow stripes towards the end and yellow borders. The reverse has two firemen manning a hose.
Army Long Service Good Conduct Medal LSGC Medal
The Army Long Service and Good Conduct medal has been awarded since 1831 by the Army. There are 3 issues of Meritorious medals.
This medal would be worn towards the right-hand side as you look at it and would normally be for at least 10 years service with a immaculate record.
As the recipient it would typically be worn with at least two other medals a service medal for example .
Royal Navy LSGC Medal
This is a British Naval Long Service and Good Conduct medal awarded to Marines and Navy personnel. The Navy LSGC has been awarded since 1831. There are 3 types of Meritorious medals and this is the rarest.
British Falklands /South Atlantic Campaign Medal 1982.
This medal was awarded for the campaign of April to July 1982 to recover the Falklands Islands following the Argentian Invasion. Falklands campaign South Atlantic April-July 1982 over 30,000 medals were awarded.
A rosette denotes actual service on or south of the Ascension Islands.
Battles include -Goose Green, Tumbledown, Port Stanley to name a few.
Units involved such as the SAS, SBS, Parachute Regiment, Royal Marines, Scots and Welsh Guards, Gurkhas, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force make this a very collectable medal.
Accumulated Campaign Service Medal
Accumulated Campaign Service Medal.
Awarded to holders of the GSM /CSM General / Campaign Service Medal post 1964 for completion of 36 months accumulated campaign service since August 14th 1969.Further periods of 36 months are denoted by a clasp.
Ribbon colour is Green edge strips with a thick purple centre inserted by a buff yellow centre strip.
The reverse of the medal has an inscription FOR ACCUMALATED CAMPAIGN SERVICE set within a four-part ribbon surrounded by a branch of oak leaves with laurel and olive leaves woven through the motto ribbon.
OSM Afghanistan Medal

Intended for minor campaigns for which a separate medal is not awarded. It replaces the GSM except for Northern Ireland and Air operation Iraq. Awarded from 11th September 2001.
The ribbon colours are Broad central Red stripe flanked by royal Blue and light Blue with buff edges.
OSM Sierra Leone Medal

RAF LSGC
The Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct medal.
has been awarded since 1st July 1919 by the RAF.
The ribbon is Dark Blue and Maroon with White edges.
The Obverse has the effigy of the reigning monarch and the reverse has the RAF Eagle and crowned insignia.
Awarded for 15 years exemplary service.
GSM 1918-1962 Medal
British General Service Medal 1918-1962 Medal aka GSM Pre 1918
Issued from 1918 until 1962 this was awarded to Military and RAF personnel for numerous campaigns and operations that fell short of full scale war.<p>
The ribbon colours are purple with a central green band.
This medal can be seen with 16 different clasps including Palestine,Iraq,Brunei,Malaya to name but a few.
Replaced in 1964 by the General Service Medal which has the same colour ribbon but colours are the opposite way round.
Ashanti Medal
Ashanti Medal 1900 With KUMASSI Clasp & ribbon.
Ribbon Colours - Black with two broad green stripes.
History & Info - a High handed action by the colonial governor provoked a native uprising and the siege of the Garrison at KUMASSI.The medal was awarded to the defenders as well as personnel of the two relieving columns, Very few Europeans were involved as most were in South Africa fighting the Boers.
Afghanistan 1878 - 1880
Description - Afghanistan 1878 - 1880 with Kabul Clasp.
Ribbon Colours - Dark Green with broad Crimson edges.
History & Info - Medal Instituted - 1881. This medal was awarded to all who took part in the campaigns against Afghanistan known as the second Afghan War. In 1877 The Amir refused to accept a British resident and the following year raised an army which began harassing the Indian frontier. A treaty with Russia however, Granting it protective rights in Afghanistan precipitated an armed response from Britain. In 1880 General Roberts led a column from Kabul to Kandahar to relief General Burrows and the resulting Battle led to the defeat of the Afghans and the conclusion of the war.
Army Gold Cross
Peninsular War and war of 1812.
A cross pattee with a laurel border having a rose at the centre on each of the four flat ends. At the centre of the cross appears a British lion statant. The arms of the cross on both obverse and reverse bear the names of four battles in relief ORTHES, NIVE, TOULOUSE AND NIVELLE.
It was granted to Generals and officers of field rank for service in four or more battles.
The original is worth in excess of 25,000 GBP.

H M The Queens Silver Jubilee Medal 1977
H M The Queens Silver Jubilee Medal 1977. 30,000 were Awarded to British armed forces and normally was issued to 2 of each rank from each unit/squadron and the Police Service ,fire service and the RUC. This was the first medal to show the HM The Queen wearing the Edwards Crown (Also on the Queens Jubilee medal) and was to celebrate the 25th anniversary on 6th Feb 1977 The original was un-named and was Silver. The Colours represent the Union Jack.
United Nations Bosnia Medal UNPROFOR
United Nations Protection force 1992 ribbon UNPROFOR- The reverse side of this medals has "In service of peace" in English only. The medal is awarded to British troops who served under the UN for the peacekeeping duties/ protection force starting from 1992 onwards.
NATO Kosovo Medal.
The ribbon colours are NATO Blue with a white central stripe and on the edges. Awarded to British and Alliance forces serving under NATO command in Kosovo or the Adriatic for 30 continuous days .

The ribbon colours are NATO Blue with a white central stripe with silver thread interwoven Awarded to British and Alliance forces serving under NATO command in the anywhere in the Balkans or the Adriatic for 30 continuous days .
NATO MACEDONIA
The ribbon colours are NATO Blue with 4 white stripes . Awarded to British and Alliance forces serving under NATO command in Macedonia or the Adriatic for 30 continuous days .
NATO FORMER YUGOSLAVIA
The ribbon colours are NATO Blue with 2 white stripes. Awarded to British and Alliance forces serving under NATO command in the Former Yugoslavia or the Adriatic for 30 continuous days .
Pacific Star Medal WW2 British
This is the least known WW2 Campaign star and unlike the other campaign stars it is only awarded to RAF and Commonwealth aircrews.
The ribbon colour is interesting as it has a pale blue stripe (indicating the sky) black edges (night flying) and a narrow yellow stripe on each side (indicating enemy search lights).
Awarded for operational flying from UK bases over Europe for a period of 2 months between 3rd September 1939 and 4th June 1944.
The Defence Medal
The Defence Medal was awarded to service personnel for three years service at home or six months service overseas in territories subjected to air attack or otherwise closely threatened. Personnel of anti-aircraft command, RAF Ground crews, Dominion forces stationed in the UK, the Home Guard , Civil Defence, National Fire Service.
The ribbon colours has two broad bars of green indicating green land superimposed by narrow stripes of black (the blackout) with a wide band of orange (firebombing) in the centre.
1939 1945 End of War Medal
British 1939 -1945 Medal as known as End Of War Medal.
Ribbon Colour is a Narrow Red stripe in the centre, with a narrow white stripe on either side, broad red stripes at either edge and two intervening stripes of Blue.
Issued - For All fulltime personnel of the armed forces wherever they were serving the and had completed at least 28 days service between 3rd September 1939 and the 2nd September 1945.
Obverse side shows the Effigy of King George VI. Reverse side has a triumphant lion trampling on a dragon symbolising the Axis powers.
HM The Queens Golden Jubilee Medal 2002
The Queens British Jubilee Medal that was issued in 2002/3. This was normally issued to eligible personnel who had served 5 years with their unit of the Armed Forces and Individuals of the Ulster Constabulary , Emergency Services as well as other organisations.
Ribbons colours are Red, White and Blue.
1939-45 Star Medal WW2 British
British/ Commonwealth 1939-1945 Star World War 2 campaign star.
It was awarded to personnel who had completed six months service in specified operational commands overseas, between 3rd September 1939 and 2nd September 1945.
Africa Star Medal WW2 British
British Africa Star Medal World War 2.
The ribbon bears the colours of the three services with the Army (red) in the centre and Air force Light Blue and the Navy Dark Blue and the background symbolising the desert. The medal was Awarded for service in North Africa principally against Rommels, Afrika Korps Covers -Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco and Malta but the 8th Army bar/clasp is for the decisive battle of El Alamein 23rd October 1942 and troops serving with the British 8th Army.
Atlantic Star Medal WW2 British
British Atlantic Star WW2 Medal
Ribbon colours are - Blue white green. The same as the South Atlantic medal Falklands.
This campaign star was awarded to the Royal Navy and Commonwealth navies for six months service afloat between 3rd September 1939 and 8th May 1945 in the Atlantic or home waters and to personnel employed in the Convoys to North Russia and the South Atlantic.
Burma Star Medal WW2 British
British WW2 Burma Star Medal.
The Burma star was granted for service during the often ferocious fighting against the Japanese in Burma, Malaya 11th December 1941 - 2nd September 1945.
France and Germany Star WW2 British
Awarded for operational service in France, Belgium. The Netherlands or Germany from 6th June 1944 to 8th May 1945.
Service In the North Sea, English Channel and Bay of Biscay in connection with the Campaign in northern Europe also qualified .
Prior eligibility for the Atlantic or Air Crew Europe stars entitled personnel only to a bar for France and Germany. Conversely a first award od the France and Germany star could earn an Atlantic bar.
Italy Star Medal WW2 British
British WW2 Italy Star Medal 11th June 1943 - 8th May 1945.
The Italy star was intended to reward service in Italy from the Invasion of Pantellaria and Sicily until the end of the war, but despite it's title it was granted for operational service in the Aegean ,the Dodecanese ,Corsica, Elba, Greece, Sardinia and Yugoslavia.
Iraq Medal OP TELIC (Gulf War 2)
This medal was awarded to all military and civilian personnel involved in OPERATION TELIC in Kuwait and Iraq from January 20th 2003. Those who actually took part in the combat from March 19th 2003 were awarded the clasp/bar denoted by a silver rosette on the ribbon.
Operation Telic missions after this date were not awarded a clasp/bar.
Ribbon Colours are central narrow stripe of Black, White and Red flanked by broad sand coloured edges.
Rhodesia Medal
This medal was awarded to personnel serving In Rhodesia for fourteen days between 1st December 1979 and 20th March 1980, pending the elections and the emergence of the independent republic of Zimbabwe. Medals to the armed forces were issued un-named or named in impressed capitals.
Ribbon Colours are Sky Blue with a narrow stripe of Red, White and dark Blue in the centre.
1914 Mons Star medal with clasp
Awarded to British forces who had been under heavy enemy fire during the 5th August - 22nd November 1914 WW1.George V authorised that troops serving in France and Belgium were to be issued with this bar for their suffering and commitment to holding the front line. They also regularly attacked and probed the enemy in an effort to break the stalemate.

This bronze award with it's dramatic reverse side scene recognised the vital services of the merchant navy during the war just over 133,000 were awarded with one ore more voyages in a designated war zone.
Territorial Force War Medal Brit Rare Medal
British Territorial Force War Medal was granted to all members of the Territorial Force embodied before 30th September 1914, who had completed four years service by that date and who had served outside the United Kingdom between 4th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.
Only 34,000 medals were awarded for WW1.
British War Medal 1914 -1920
This medal was awarded for the successful conclusion of the first world war but later extended to cover the period of 1919-1920 and service in mine clearing. Some 6500,000 were awarded in silver but about 110,000 in Bronze were issued mainly to Chinese, Indian and Maltese personnel.
The ribbon colours are - Orange watered centre with stripes of White and Black at each side with borders of Royal Blue.
1914 - 15 Star
Awarded to those who saw service in any theatre of war between 5th August 1914 and 31st December 1915 other than those who had already qualified for the 1914 star.
No fewer than 2,350,000 were awarded for the first world war.
The ribbon colours are Silk Red, White and Blue.
British WW1 Victory Medal 1914 - 1918.
The obverse of this medal shows the standing figure of Victory holding a palm branch in her right hand and stretching out her left hand.
The reverse has a laurel wreath containing a four line inscription.
The ribbon colour is a double rainbow with Indigo edges and Red in the centre.
Issued to all those who already held the 1914 or 1914-15 stars and most of those who had the British war medal.
WORLD WAR 2 MEDAL HISTORY
There are eight World War 2 campaign stars and 2 war medals they Include Air Crew Europe Star, Africa Star, Atlantic Star, Burma Star, France and Germany Star, Italy Star, Pacific Star, 1939 45 Star, End of War medal and Defence Medal.
Air Crew Europe Star Medal WW2
British Air Crew Europe Star Medal WW2. This is the least known WW2 Campaign star and unlike the other campaign stars it is only awarded to RAF and Commonwealth aircrews. Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) Medal
As part of the decision to remove distinctions of rank in awards for bravery this decoration replaced the DSO for gallantry as well as the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal CGM and the Distinguished Conduct Medal DCM it was first awarded in 1995.
This cross is a pattee imposed on a wreath of laurel with the royal crown in a circular panel in the centre suspended by a ring from a plain suspension bar.
Ribbon Colours are White with Blue edges and a Red central stripe.
Air Force Cross (AFC) Medal

Obverse the cross consists of a thunderbolt, the arms conjoined by wings, base bar terminating in a bomb, surmounted by another cross of aeroplane propellers the finials inscribed with the royal cypher. Reverse side has the royal cypher and the date 1918.

Instituted at the same time as the AFC in 1918 , it was awarded to NCO,s and men of the RAF for courage or devotion to duty while flying, but not on active operations against the enemy. After the 1993 review of gallantry awards the AFM was discontinued and the AFC is now available both to officers and other ranks.
The ribbon colours are - Diagonal narrow stripes of White and Crimson.
